TO….OBLIVION: Historic Landmarks Around Los Angeles
Alexander Elliott Miller is a composer and guitarist on the faculty of California State University Long Beach and Chapman University.
“TO….OBLIVION” is a suite of compositions for electric guitar, sound effects and video, inspired by historic landmarks around Los Angeles, of some societal or personal significance. In each video, a slideshow of images of a selected historic site are presented accompanied by environmental sounds, sound effects, and a live guitar soundtrack performed by the composer, examine the constantly changing landscape of our greater city and the forces driving it.
Performance includes presentations of: “The Belmont Tunnel,” an abandoned subway tunnel downtown; “The Walk of a Thousand Lights,” Long Beach’s Pike Amusement Park; “The Dunbar Hotel,” a hotel at the heart of Central Avenue’s mid-20th Century Jazz scene; “Zanja Madre,” the original aqueduct in LA, built by Spanish settlers in 1781; “At Sunset (and Horn Ave.),” the Sunset Strip’s Tower Records; and “Anaheim’s Center Street.”
