Toy Piano Cats with Steven Speciale

Steven Speciale is a pianist, composer, and conductor. He teaches music at Loyola High School of Los Angeles where he is also the Choir Director and Music Director of the Hannon Theatre Company. The Toy Piano Cats are a new music and art ensemble at Loyola.

The Toy Piano Cats will host a concert centered around their interpretation of John Cage's "Bird Cage" (1972). According to Cage, "Bird Cage" is “Twelve tapes to be distributed by a single performer in a space in which people are free to move and birds to fly.” The duration, arrangement, and modulation of the tapes comprising this work were ascertained by means of I-Ching chance operations.

Foam core silhouettes of bird cages will double as bluetooth speakers. Hung in space, digital projections of animated birds cast bird cage shadows on the walls over the animations. Field recordings of birds and other sounds are processed and played according to chance procedures.
